Best Recipes for Kale Chips – Baked, Cheesy, BBQ and Spicy

I have never been a kale fan – until kale chips came along. In the past I tried kale, and I really wanted to like it. I really did. I do focus a great deal on healthy food, leaning toward many, many green and leafy veggies. But I just could not do the kale thing.

One day I heard one of my son’s 11 year old friends say how much he loved kale chips — huh? Really? Then one day while perusing around the online world of healthy and organic eating I bumped into it again. And again.

Several days ago I finally found a good recipe and made some kale chips at home, and understood what all the fuss was about — kale chips are nothing like eating raw kale. They’re pretty darned yummy, in fact. 🙂

Now I’m hooked.

I decided to round up the “best of” kale chip recipes for 4 different categories: plain baked, cheesy, BBQ and spicy. I have done just that, and am passing them along to you here.

Would you rather buy kale chips than make them?

Here is an article that can point you in the right direction of where to buy kale chips online - it's a helpful read if this is the way you want to go!

Best Baked Kale Chips Recipe

I did my due diligence in looking for the very best plain ole’ baked kale chips recipe online, and no matter how I searched for it, this is the one that came up time after time.  A “tried and true” recipe from AllRecipes, and it’s a good one.

This is the one that can “groove you in” on how to make them (practically with your eyes closed and hands tied behind your back).

One tip: Try adding the olive oil to the kale in a bowl before putting on the baking sheet – it helps a lot to have the oil evenly distributed.

  • 1 bunch of kale
  • Approx. 1 T olive oil (buy recommended organic olive oil here)
  • Approx. 1 tsp seasoned salt (buy recommended organic seasoned salt here)
  • Alternative to seasoned salt – use plain sea salt

Best Cheesy Kale Chips Recipe

This cheesy kale chips recipe from the Minimalist Baker appears to be the best one – there are quite a number of them to pick from online, but this one is not only popular, it is easy to read and make.

And oh my, it is delicious!

As a note, the recipe looks like a good one for vegetarians; it is made with ingredients alternative to cheese. (I mention an alternative with real cheese below in the “What you will need…” section.)

  • 1 Bunch of kale
  • Olive oil, grape seed oil or avocado oil (buy organic olive oil here)

Optional:  If you would rather have the cheese seasoning pre-made (sprinkle over kale), and you prefer using real cheese:

When I first realized kale could be made into chips, I went a little overboard. Kale chip nachos. Kale chip sprinkles. Kale chip salad. Kale chips on everything. But a cheesy version? That was a new challenge. This recipe was inspired by a recent trip to Trader Joe’s, when I discovered yet another amazing food item I’d never seen before: Cheesy kale chips!

Best Spicy Kale Chips Recipe (Indian Spice and Chipotle)

This “recipe” is actually two recipes, a special one that gives tips for two types of super-tasting, yummy and yes, SPICY kale chips.

There’s nothing better than snacking on chips and dip when you’re watching a sports game … or a movie … or even when you need a quick healthy snack for kids . But if you’re brave enough to read the ingredients list on a bag of most potato chips, you’ll lose your appetite quite quickly.
